PHTHALONITRILE (PN) High-Performance Resin Systems
Phthalonitrile (PN) belongs to a family of high-performance thermosetting resins developed by Azista Composites, designed to satisfy the stringent requirements of demanding applications. PN composites exhibit superior high-temperature performance compared to any other thermoset composites used in aerospace, defense, marine, and high-temperature industries.
Core Thermal Properties and Features
Extreme Thermal Resistance: Phthalonitrile resins unlock opportunities previously unattainable with alternative thermoset systems, featuring an exceptional Glass Transition Temperature (Tg) of 435°C.
Operational Stability: The working temperature is specified as ≥300°C. The system demonstrates excellent thermal stability, with a minimal mass loss of only ∼2.88% after 6000 hours of aging at 250°C (482°F).
Simple Manufacturing: The resin system is available as a single-part system, which streamlines manufacturing by requiring no additional curing agent.
Phthalonitrile Product Family
Azista offers Phthalonitrile in three distinct product forms to suit various manufacturing techniques:
AZKLM0301NX (Resin): A single-part resin system ideal for Vacuum Infusion and Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM).
AZKLM0402 (Prepreg): This product consists of solvent-free, hot melt prepregs & towpregs with enhanced thermal resistance and medium tack and drape characteristics. It is suitable for advanced manufacturing methods like autoclave, vacuum bagging, and compression moulding, offering ease of processing and operational stability at elevated temperatures.
AZPNF01 (Foam Core): This is a highly porous and rigid core (foam) material developed for sandwich structures. It features a very low density of 0.25 g/cc (and can be varied up to 0.3 g/cc) and maintains the high Tg of 435°C.
Key Applications
Phthalonitrile composites are used in applications requiring superior high-temperature performance:
Aerospace & Defense: For near-engine components (like engine pylon parts and casings), thermal protection systems, and high-temperature leading edges.
Marine & Structures: Used for maritime structures.
Foam Applications (AZPNF01): Specifically used as a heat/fire ablative layer and in load-bearing sandwich panels.
